A complete inventory of users is being compiled. Look out for a petition to sign up to, going on display sooon. The plan is to submit the petition with our application in October, for review by Canada Post for installation in 2011.

Mink Lake Bend Improvements

Work has now been completed on widening and levelling the bend on Meredith Lane at Mink Lake corner. Widening required a ditch for continued drainage of an old spring in the vicinity of the works.

An application has been made for 50% part funding of this work under the South Frontenac Township’s ‘2010 Private Lane Upgrading Assistance Policy’. The aim of this funding is to address safety standards on back roads and improve access for emergency vehicles. On the basis of an inspection by the Township Public Works Manager, our road engineers proceeded with the work. Costs are now being submitted to the council and it is hoped the subsidy for the FINFLA road fund will be received sometime in November this year.

Buffy Lake Curve Improvement Project Successfully Completed

Improvements to the Buffy Lake curve were successfully completed over the period November 27 to December 2, 2008. Work was delayed to late fall, due to the availability of contractor resources, but a brief window of acceptable weather, enabled completion of the project over a two working day period.

Thanks are due to our road engineers, Stu St. John and Carl Turner who managed the construction activity and ensured compliance with Ministry requirements.

Work was carried out in the late fall to minimise the impact on the habitat of fish that inhabit the lake, which include Pumpkin Seed, Crappies, Blue Gill and Sunfish. Filling stopped 10 - 15' short of two small White Sucker spawning beds next to the culvert so that they were not disturbed.

Conservation measures also included reinstating the shoreline after operations. The existing soil was removed from the shoreline, stockpiled and then replaced, with an additional load of topsoil, to re-establish the vegetative buffer. A layer of straw was spread over the new soils on the shoreline of the construction site to stabilize them. Twenty five dogwood saplings, previously sourced, were planted in May, 2009.

To ensure that sediment remained in the work area Buffy Lake drainage was blocked by straw bales forming a U around the culvert. There was no impact on the surrounding wetland areas as work was carried out when the lake had frozen so no surface water was circulating. Also the water level was low and no water was draining.

A temporary road bed
of 5/8 gravel was been layed over the rocks to reinstate the carriageway. The rocks were left to settle before the surface was finished as part of normal road maintenance work in the spring of 2009.

A road bed has now been laid over the granite base, topsoil replaced on the shore-line and stones placed in the lake to reinstate the spawning grounds. Finally, some dogwood saplings and, thanks to FINFLA President, Taneda Dawes, also shrubs and flowers, have been planted to reinstate vegetation along the bank.

New Garbage Boxes

improved garbage boxes have now been installed at the junction of Meredith Lane and Bauder Drive. FINFLA has been actively involved in this community project in partnership with the Township to develop a 'communal garbage bin assistance policy'. Half the cost of the new boxes was met by the Township in return for the Association agreeing to maintain the boxes and monitor and tag any untagged bags, as we do now.

Two green garbage boxes have been purchased on behalf of FINFLA residents. A third white garbage box is also located on the site. It is owned by the Township, to replace the one on Bauder Drive, but can be used as an overflow if ours are full.
